Goal of blackjack is simple – get cards with total value closer to 21 than dealer without going over 21. Number cards are worth their face value. Face cards – Jack, Queen, King – are worth 10. Ace is worth 1 or 11 depending on what helps your hand more. If your cards go over 21 you bust and lose automatically even if dealer also busts later. Dealer must hit until he reaches 17 or higher – this rule is fixed and dealer has no choice. You as player have choices – this is what gives blackjack skill element that other casino games do not have.
Basic strategy is mathematically correct decision for every possible combination of your cards versus dealer upcard. It was calculated by computers running millions of hands. If you follow basic strategy perfectly you reduce house edge to only 0.5% which is lowest of any casino game. Basic strategy tells you exactly when to hit, stand, double down or split. For example – always split Aces and Eights. Never split Tens. Always hit when you have 11 or less. Always stand when dealer shows 6 and you have 12 or more. Most common mistake beginners make is standing on weak hands because they are afraid to bust. Correct play is often to hit even when it feels dangerous. Some blackjack versions allow you to double down on any two cards – always use this option on 9, 10 and 11 against weak dealer. When you receive two cards of same value you can split them into two separate hands and play each independently – but you must place second bet equal to first.
